Last week when the new patch dropped one of the temporarily wounded was the add-on Oqueue from the gang at Solidice.com.
There are a few add-ons that I consider must have to make things easier by playing World of Warcraft. A good overlay/healing array to make the Graphics User Interface easier to use. Different add-ons I use for my auctioning including TradeSkillmaster.com.
From Tuesday to Friday the Oqueue system (which I use extensively for my flex runs) was unable to communicate with other versions. Not to get into the technical aspects (mostly because they are above my head) but with the new changes in the API that the blizzard programmers put in with the new patch it horked up the system that Oqueue was using. Thankfully by the weekend they were able to get the changes into the new update for Oqueue and everyone cheered in happiness.
So why talk about this today? I have said before that I am not a huge fan of being dependant on an add-on that basically cripples my ability to do things. With Oqueue it limited my ability to be able to finish my weekly runs on my toons. Thankfully, I was able to jam everything in on the weekend and be moderately successful.
We already know that with the next expansion that the powers that be will be installing their own version of Oqueue. From the PowerPoint presentations from Blizzcon as well as added information from developers chats they have a high expectation that this new feature will be even better than the current oqueue system in use.
What I also hope is that they give a huge overhaul of the Auction House system and how it is set up. Currently the Auction House is adequate for its usage, but most players will end up installing useful add-ons such as Trade Skill Manager and Auctionator for their general needs. A player who doesn't install some type of auction house management system puts themselves at a serious disadvantage.
Then there is the other side of the coin when it comes to this idea. Every major (and sometimes minor patches) end up messing up one or more of the add-ons. Sometimes it is as simple as just needing to update to a different API (programming term for how programs communicate) which is what occurred with Oqueue. But there have been times that serious changes occurred that caused add-ons to not work for days or even completely take them down permanently. Becoming dependant on add-ons can create that catch-22 situation where you're stymied in day to day affairs till an update from the coder.
Making sure that you have the basics down and how to use the 'base' auction house with no frills can allow you to muddle your way through if a catastrophe occurs. Being able to post basic auctions and being able to do hard searches for current pricing can allow you to limp your way along if your favorite auction house add-on blows up. Also keeping track of the programmers on their websites for these add-ons, and throwing them a few thank you's can encourage them to keep up with the needs of their worshipping programming congregation. Most of these programmers are doing this for their own enjoyment and not getting paid. Keep that in mind if things are not updated immediately.
Add-ons allow you to change the auction house into a well tuned machine with a supercharged engine. But sometimes jumping on a 10 speed bike is all you have to go with. Be prepared the next time that things go boom and know your options to keep the gold flowing in.
